FAQ's

You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers! Hopefully. If not, feel free to beam us with the contact form on this page.

shopping

straål is a secure online shop with delivery via a courier network. Select your desired items by adding them to your #straålbox and simply follow the checkout steps. You do not need to be a subscriber or account holder to shop, but you’ll need to fill in your correct details to ensure your goodies get delivered.

If you experience any difficulties whatsoever, alert us at the contact form at the bottom of this page or [email protected]

We accept all major cards via our payment partner, PayFast and Peach Payments [including Diner’s Club while Apple Pay should be available soon]. Additionally, we’re a proud MobiCred and PayFlex partner which allows more flexible payment options. Lastly, you’re welcome to pay with EFT via Instant EFT.

We’re working on more!

Unfortunately not. If you abandon your purchase, some items might become victims of their own success during this time (i.e. go out of stock).

Usually 5 business days, excluding weekends and holidays.

We’re just as excited as you are when we receive an order! In normal [not-mal] circumstances, we process orders within one business day. The couriers will usually collect your straålbox within the same day or the next day; if not, we flag it. Depending on the destination, your straålbox will then be in transit for 1-3 business days.

Feel free to beam us to flag when this is not the case!

Because we deal with personal care items, subjectivity plays a huge role in the experience. Plus, people have different skin types, skinbiomes, hair types, underarm microbiomes and so forth. Though we do our best to delight with our platform, subjective experience does not qualify for returns or refunds.

Don’t fret, we maintain an industry standard with regards to cosmetic and personal care returns under certain circumstances, see the policy here

Anywhere within South Africa [we’re working on more locations]. Please beam us if you’re having trouble or are hesitant about whether we can ship to your address–we’d like to help.

Please note, purchases made with the intent to forward out of South African territory do not fall under our shipping responsibility. Once your straålbox is delivered to its first address, our duty ends. If a package gets forwarded from there, it becomes the forwarder’s responsibility.

We ship from GAUTENG.

Here’s what we do different.

  1. We do our best to provide efficient service: we’re currently celebrating a 100% delivery rate and a 98% “no-mistake” packing rate. We’ll keep you updated if this changes!
  2. We endeavour to provide effective shopping tools, including verifying claims through Provenance®, among others. An initiative we hope to grow in 2023 as the first South African partner of the tech company. As a niche retailer [vs brand owners/manufacturers] we go the extra mile to make sure we relay appropriate information, however, we do also rely on brands to provide the correct, honest information as proprietors of their formulations and products.
  3. We check ingredients ourselves while full ingredient lists will always be available; when it comes to beauty retailers in SA, ingredient information isn’t always available, surprisingly [we expect other platforms to imitate this initiative].
  4. We have a qualified skincare therapist on our team [Advanced Diploma Health & Skincare: Isa Carstens Stellenbosch; Awarded Best Student for Spa Therapies & Management]
  5. We never sell brands without their permission, we’re authorised partners of each. This is also surprisingly unique for SA.
  6. We keep our prices for imported goodies as in-line as possible to give our #straålsociety the best prices. Plus, we never inflate our prices before common sale days [e.g. Black Friday]
  7. We see ourselves as a go-to for up-and-coming South African brands as well: We were early partners to Beaut and lelive, for example, and are one of a few platforms to have GoodMind.
  8. We keep up because we’re not only users of all the types of brands we offer, but also beauty explorers: we like to make up our own minds and go with what we love, hence the platform will always have a personal touch. Similarly, we like to think we spot potential early and love to work with young brands. A testimony to this is our partnership with Dedcool before they hit Sephora racks. We like to be the first port of call for international indie brands! As Blondie said, call me.
  9. We are reachable: we’ve never ignored a customer query, to date.
  10. We partner up to straål up: we’re one of few smaller, niche beauty platforms to have Rewards Partners through banks like Absa, among others.
  11. The not-boring clause: We endeavour to bring you the most unique and well curated platform with a touch of daringness. We curate according to what fits our platform best and therefore keep it x-clusive. There are many brands on our wishlist, let us know yours too! If you’d like to help us get a brand to SA, let us know below and let the brand know about us.

By supporting our initiatives, we can grow to make the platform even bigger, brighter and beamier.

topic

For international readers, it means ‘to beam’ or ‘beam’. It’s a crucial part of a whole–a full circle.

It is at once recognisable as South African without the usual titular clichés and simultaneously recognisable as a European word [Swedish, Dutch and German].

The overring represents our criteria and encompassing values i.e. looking at the full(er) circle, the full formulation and disclosing it [single highlighted ingredients or singular features are not enough; formulations are more complex] as well as the whole story of a brand.

In a nutshell, it means we’re compliant with the Customer Protection Act.

In a longer explanation: it means we do not offer diverted supply goods and have direct partnerships with all our brands to ensure we deliver the best service, quality and price points for our #straålsociety.

Read our article on the matter [here].

Yes, ja, yebo. We’re registered in the CIPC as well as VAT registered.

We initially started with plain boxes and sleeves as to keep our packaging 100% recyclable and reusable. This was intentional as we believe most people will just throw away packaging anyway, so no need to be fancy. Similarly, we re-use materials for “buffers” and “fillers” so that we’re not unnecessarily wasteful. We’ve been keeping our packaging simple and have not updated it to “be cute” or match our branding, yet. We hope to update packaging when we can and in a thoughtful manner. Additionally, we use different size boxes to match order size so that we do not send one lipgloss in a shoebox size carton.

Our courier sleeves are made from biodegradable corn. We initially worked with the amazing initiative mieliemailer who sadly closed down. If you have suggestions of replacements, let us know! In this day and age, there’s just no excuse to be posting 100s of orders on your Instagram stories…in plastic Courier bags.

Please note, during the South African summers, items can be subjected to extreme heat once it leaves straål HQ and during transit. This is something beyond our control.

Case-by-case. We look at every detail as well as where the brand is in their journey.

To read why we chose specific brands, refer to individual brand pages.

We are working on FAQs for specific products. In the meantime, you can ask us anything. Our product pages aim to be as informative as possible, so check them out. Some content is being updated at this time.

Two things about our sleeves:

  1. it’s generally spritzed with Dedcool
  2. we’ve always got something up ’em

We get a lot of enquiries from influencers via Instagram DM, we can’t always answer them. Know that this is not because you’re not doing amazing work! Sometimes, we’re inundated, other times our marketing budget has already been set and other times we don’t receive sufficient information which makes it time consuming to evaluate.

If you’d like to work with straål, please send a detailed proposal and kit to [email protected] [please include relevant and thorough details]

Team work makes the dream work–we welcome partnerships and enquiries. If you’d like to request a media kit, quotes, interviews, or you’d like to feature our products, please email [email protected]

If you’d like to be on our PR list, please apply [here]. Note that this list is open to relevant parties only and not the general public.

Please apply [here] or email us at [email protected] with a brand deck and information to set up a call. Please include as much detail as possible. Do note that we get a lot of submissions, so it might take a while. Because we’re super niche, we evaluate brands carefully in order to ensure that we are a fit for your awesome brand and vice versa!

For international brands, we’d love to see you in SA [if appropriate] please also email us as above.

That’s great! We’d love to help. We are highly selective of where we stock to ensure success of both the stockist and the brands we distribute, as well as ensuring we follow brand positioning guidelines. Please contact us at [email protected] to enquire. Please include your store name/url, province and details [including other brands you stock or want to stock]. We do not work with unauthorised retailers or platforms, sorry.

Our awesome current stockists include: Gone Outdoor, Mash Boutique [Green Point, CT], Revel Selfcare [Stellenbosch], and ARC Stores [nationwide].

Sure! We’re able to give insights into the industry, public speaking [including television], guidance for new South African brands [including business development strategies, marketing strategy, design and branding] as well as inputs and guidance for International brands looking for the best fit for entry into the market. We’ve learnt a lot from our experience but also mistakes. In fact, the latter is most helpful and we’d like to help you avoid them. Give us a beam [email protected] [Subject line: Work with the straål duo].

Rest assured that WE LOVE receiving dms, but, we’re also human! We get a lot of random dms [often going to the hidden request tab where it’s not always noticeable] and emails; while we’ve never missed a customer query to this date, influencer-, creator- or PR- dms can become overwhelming. Here’s the lowdown!

  • Treat it like a CV or job application: We’re often inundated with dms from well-meaning people who have not familiarised themselves with our platform or its products. Plus, those that don’t really give enough info for us to respond to other than wanting to work with us. These become super time consuming to answer. We’re all ears, but you have to tell us a little bit more!
  • Treat it with authenticity: We try our best to keep everything as authentic as possible by partnering with people who are real users of our platform and are able to give honest reviews, not paid-for-positivity. Not everything is for everyone, that’s ok. We’re not comfortable with inauthentic marketing [in fact, that’s why we do so little of it], and our #straålsociety rewards us with their trust. Something we keep in the highest esteem. You might just find, as a content creator, your audience will value your partnerships more if they know they can rely on you.
  • Don’t neglect etiquette [hey, that rhymes!]: Unfortunately, we won’t respond to dms that read “hi fam” or “hi” only. Worse, dms without any greetings or additional information whatsoever. Repetitive dms? We’ll assume you’re a bot or spammer.

We do not have any official influencer program but we’re working on it [updated: December 2022], therefore sometimes enquiries can take a while to answer or it’s not the right time. To help with the process, please send a detailed proposal to [email protected] instead of DMs. Send us the full scoop when you reach out–we’re all humans but let’s help each other keep it real!

psst, SPECIAL NOTE:

We are a proud supplier to ARC. We do our best to ensure sufficient testers and stock are on racks in stores. However, this is not always easy to ensure with the fast pace of retail. The racks, testers and stock are the responsibility of the stockist [i.e. ARC] to manage, however, please always feel free to beam us if testers are missing or items are out of stock so we can escalate. We want to make sure you get the best experience at ARC as possible!
